RENEWS / CAPPAHAYDEN 2008
Stories / Poems
Would YOU
like to share a story / poem about our community, our people,
heroic deeds, funny incidents,
tragic events, special customs…?
It has been suggested that a booklet be compiled to record some of
these stories before they are lost forever.
We are especially interested in OLD stories / poems that may have been
told over and over again,
but were never written down
We aim to have this booklet available for Come Home Year, 2008
Some
suggestions to get you thinking (and writing!):
• A tribute to a family member / friend /
neighbour long gone
• A recall of some event (e.g. The August
Gale, Building the Grotto)
• A retelling of some funny incident,
prank or trick (on the wharf, on the fishing
grounds, in church, in school - North Side, South Side or Cappahayden)
• Christmas – the “rounds”, mummers;
Concerts, Garden parties
• Old-time cures for
ailments; Midwife stories; Berry Picking
• Going to the shop (Goodridge’s,
Jackman’s, Pat Dunne’s, Squires’, Dinn’s,
Kane’s, Brazil’s, Han Keating’s,
Mildred Murphy’s, Nell Lawlor’s,
Guiney’s,
Loyola Hearn’s, Cornelius Pittman’s,
Madge’s, Agnes Fowler’s, Harold
Lawlor’s)
Do you have something to share but are reluctant to write it down?
Let us know and we will have someone help you get it on paper.
Limitations
We must try to keep each story to a maximum of 2 typed pages (700-800
words)
Anything that could be considered a “put – down” or slanderous or has
inappropriate
language can not be included in the final booklet
Please help us to create a memorable souvenir of our community for Come
Home Year, 2008. We need your input!
This is NOT a fundraising venture. Booklets will be sold at a price to
cover the cost of printing.
The writing, compiling, etc. will be done
by volunteers.
